producer gas generator?

how do you scrub the ash and particulates from the gas? i recall producer gas can be hard on engines?

True!! It can be but there are two very simple solutions to this.

1) Build an old single piston engine with sand castings or lost waz castings so it doesn't matter and it's overbuilt anyway (my first one)

2) Bubble it through water. This helps in two ways, one by cooling the gas you get a greater density of the CO in the air. (remember boyle's gas laws, I nearly flunked P Chem) and it gives you a much cleaner burn. The water taken up wont hurt either. Most WWII aircraft engines where water injected to help with the burn by slowing expansion. Just like pinging is two fast a burn the higher the octane slows the burn. You can actually burn subpar aircraft fuels with the old pratt and whittney engines that where water injected.
