Eulogy To A Mynah Bird

Died Sunday, June ¸2015 at 1:38 in the afternoon.

Ah Scoot - was a cleverly responsive Mynah bird. We had a wonderful rapport. Loved when you bid me farewell in the morning as I was leaving for school. Loved your motorcycle imitation. Loved when you greeted me as I came home from teaching. Loved your hearty laugh. Mimicked me mercilessly. Even my Upstate New York accent. You made my heart sing.

Now I’m hollow.

The loss is more than words can convey……

Bet not a soul ever figured that this cynical, curmudgeon could wax so sickeningly maudlin over a bird.

See ya Ah Scoot; miss ya, dude …….

Do you remember the dick head on 'that other forum' who started to condemn you for having caged birds?

This was my reply, which shut him up.

A pair of Indian Myna lays 4 to 6 eggs per year.
That same pair will live about 10 years.
So that couple will lay 40 to 60 eggs in a lifetime.
Lets say an average of 50
To maintain the population only 2 eggs must survive each 10 years.

Therefore it follows that in the wild a Myna has a 2 in 50 or 4% chance of surviving.
In fact research shows that most wild animal young die in the first year.

Tell me again about those mean horrid prisons.

I had an emotional meltdown this afternoon. That bird consistently brought joy to my life. I've only been gone 2 weeks and he passed. Was vibrantly healthy, chatting up a storm when I left. Really caught me off guard.

Dicey, you should know that birds can look great in the morning and be dead at noon.

At least you gave it a much more interesting life than it would have had in the wild (if it managed to live past the first few weeks).
