Some time back, I found an NGO website (naturally), offering bio sand filters for something like $60 USD, each. However, not too long ago, I met a guy who built them locally, here in Battambang. He was leaving to go back to the US. But, he was kind enough to discuss them with me prior to doing so.

Anyway, here are two resources he gave me, to assist those who may wish to build bio sand filters. These two websites should answer most of the questions we may have concerning biosand filters.

NOTE: I have not viewed them as yet. But, I trust his information and wanted to make sure others could benefit from this information as well.

Oh, the cost for you to build these yourselves? About $12 USD, each.

both sites are very general knowledge with no useable details about how to actually make the critter and how to select the appropriate sand to use. how/when/why to clean and add more sand.

    General info is good though.

From what I understand, John, you don't add more sand. Over time, it builds a "bio" bed on the top, hence the reason to diffuse any water going into the filter, so as not to disturb the bacteria bed.

Some time back, I read where you would back flush them after a length of time - I suppose when the filtering process seriously slows down?

On the .info site, there was a link to another site, for more information on construction. CLICK HERE to view that page.

Also, I am sure there is probably tons of information and videos on sites like YouTube, on how to build them?

Well, it took a while to find one. In fact, we ended up having to order it from Phnom Penh. Probably even paid too much for it ($130 USD, all in). But, we got it, and it is for the whole house. Oh, it comes with a beefy bracket, too, and the mounting screws with washers (4), to mount it to the bracket.

Put the tape measure on it. The filter is a standard 20" X 4.5" charcoal filter. Replacement cost, by the way, he told me is $60 each.

Much cleaner water for the family to drink.
