Remote Work

Recommended Posts

Blackeye

An outfit contacted me out of the blue yesterday and asked if I'd submit my resume for a remote work position with their company, so that's a little exciting for me. I've been trying to get remote for years and while I like the present outfit, if I can't talk them into it I'll have to follow other opportunities eventually so....

I heard a knock. It was opportunity.

So here's a question: If one was in a position to sit anywhere and work for a US company, where would one choose?

Requirements are reliable infrastructure and fast ISP.

Nice to haves would be short travel time to the west coast and similar time zones.

I loved PH, but only someplace like Angeles or Manila would have adequate speed and reliability. Several places in central america look good but they are unknowns and seem to have a little higher cost of living. All of them beat Los Angeles.

Suggestions?

How would Cambo stack up?

How about Hawaii? Internet speeds are good and certainly no need for air conditioning. Rent a place on the Big Island to keep costs low. Personally I prefer the Hamakua Coast, but that's where my ranch is located.

I'd also recommend Cambodia. During my 3 visits there, I was leaning towards establishing another home there. The 'burp' in my plans was marrying a Filipina, but she hates the Philippines. I found PP to be pleasant and loved the French architecture. Battambang seemed too 'slow' for my tastes. Siam Reap was also just too small.

You might also consider Bangkok or Pattaya. I always had good internet speeds there. For me though, the local culture was a bit off-putting. I enjoy going there on vacation though and have visited there (Bangkok) about 50 times. Pattaya was less interesting for me. A bit too small...

Like I said. :)

Why stay in a country where the government and locals don't really want us?

You no longer live there.

How about Hawaii?

One of the main reasons to go remote is to avail the earned income tax exemption (or whatever the IRS calls it) so unless HI secedes I'm thinking it would not work.

Tell me more. I'm looking for reliable infrastructure, low cost of living, and delicious chicken. Has to be outside the USA for tax reasons.
