Superbike rider Nicky Hayden dies five days after cycling crash

 

World Superbike Championship rider Nicky Hayden has died five days after a cycling crash which left him fighting for life in hospital.The 35-year-old American suffered critical injuries when his bicycle collided with a car on Italy’s Rimini coastline last Wednesday.He was rushed to the intensive care unit at Cesena’s Bufalini Hospital, where medical staff confirmed he had died on Monday.A hospital statement issued on Thursday said Hayden had suffered "a serious polytrauma", which is a medical term to describe the condition of a person who has multiple traumatic injuries.Hayden, who raced for Red Bull Honda, was training in Italy following his 12th-place finish in the World Superbike Championship race at Imola the previous Sunday.Fellow riders and sports stars took to social media to pay tribute.
