Bokor hill

We had a trip up Bokor hill (Kampot) a few days ago, It's well worth renting a moto in town for $5 or less for the day. Entry at the bottom of the hill is $0.50. It's around 37km one way. The road up there is excellent, very twisty and smooth. We rode all around the sights up there, and visited the waterfalls while it was raining, and ate chicken and rice undercover at $2 per dish. It would have been wise of me to take a jacket due to it turning so cold on the way back down.

I forget not. Was that a casino, Andy?

Eerie but fabulous place. When we lived in Kampot the wife and I would go up there every two weeks. Always a unique adventure. Though around three in the afternoon the fog rolls in and it gets quite chilly as in as cold as a witch's tit.

Yes Paul it is the old casino. There is plenty of good reading about the place. Just google, worth the read. I am so happy I went, and one day I will return.

I had read about the recent bus crash some time before we went up! Apparently the brakes failed. I saw the skid marks well before the bend, then nothing after.

Here's a review from 5 years ago.

Bokor  Mountain– Enter The Twilight Zone

Bokor Mountain is one eerie place. First off the summit is at least 20 to 30 degrees F chillier than the foot. Also several times I’ve been there I drove through the clouds; and sometimes the summit is fogged in, giving it and all the ruined buildings from its colonial past an otherworldly feel. The whole environment has a Gothic aura.

The new road is a breeze; well planned out and constructed. The drive up is one phenomenal vista after another till ya hit the clouds; then it’s reminiscent of the Twilight Zone- the brisk, howling winds above, the clouds below.

The Old Casino is an amazing maze of nonsensical design. My kid got lost for 10 minutes in the catacomb like basement one time. Frightened yells echoed through the labyrinth – scared the heck outa him.

Down the road from the Old Casino are more very odd ruins of probably once grand colonial architecture. Every square inch is literally covered with layer upon layer of graffiti. It reminds me of one of those molding mansions in the Hammer films of the late 50s, early 60s starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.  The chill factor certainly ads to the eeriness quotient.

Definitely stop by the Old Catholic church on the summit. It’s been invaded by squatters now, but both the exterior architectural design and the squalor inside are intriguing.

I’m not much of a fan of the new casino and all the housing development going on near the summit. Just worth a quick drive through.

The Bokor Mountain experience is strange and captivating in a Twilight Zone sort a way.  I recommend it.
