Yes be very aware they do bite and cause irritation. BED BUGS.

After my few days getaway, on our return home, my back became irritated and itchy.

I have been fortunate never to have this problem in my lifetime before.

This is the little pest.

A little bit of information from various sites - wikiHow - NHS Choices.

Bed bugs were once a common public health pest worldwide, declining in incidence through the mid 20th century. However, bed bugs have undergone a dramatic, worldwide resurgence since they have now evolved resistance to common insecticides. Bed bugs are one of the great travelers of the world and are readily transported via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture. To get rid of bed bugs, act at the first signs of infestation and use an integrated pest management approach involving prevention, sanitation, and chemical treatment. Bed bugs can be persistent, so you'll need to demonstrate a greater level of persistence if you want to eliminate them.

Don't let the name bedbug fool you. Bedbugs can be found any place humans rest and lounge and nearby. Bedbugs can be found under school desks, restaurant benches, on computers in the library, chairs, hospital beds and curtains or on a store wall. The same goes for carpets. Many times a brush against a wall in on infested area can lead to bedbugs in the home. Bedbugs are very good at clinging onto fabrics. Transportation hubs such as airports, train stations and bus terminals are also key infestation stations to be wary of.

They can also cling to curtain rods, air conditioners, fans and also inside electronics.

Bedbug bites are painless, but some people experience a reaction to them. This can occur from a few minutes after being bitten up to a week or two later.

Bedbug bites:

A_1016_bedbugs-bite_at2e4k_A.jpg
  • can cause itchy red bumps on the skin
  • usually occur on exposed areas such as the face, neck, hands or arms
  • often occur in lines across the skin
  • may cause a rash or fluid-filled blisters in more severe cases
  • can become infected with bacteria if scratched â€“ signs of infection include pain, increasing redness and swelling

The bites usually fade in a few days. If they're very itchy, you can buy a mild steroid cream (such as hydrocortisone) or antihistamine tablets to relieve the itch.

See your GP if you develop signs of a skin infection (pain, redness and swelling). You may need antibiotics.

I got torn up by one in my room in San Francisco back in 2007. And it only takes one!

Never had this unfortunate experience before! Feels like I have been ravaged. Alas now I have got myself antibiotics, due to an allergic reaction to the cream or the bite.

Mate, where did you stay, that had bed bugs? No offence meant here. But, the only places I have even heard of having bed bugs, were at backpacker type guesthouses. That's why I wouldn't stay at one to save my life.

No offence taken. It was not the hotel in Kampot, the hotel was very new. And not my friends house too in snooky, My lady was with me mostly and she is not bitten. I put it down to one or two girly bars and so on in snooky! OK enough said :)

Carrying things outside and placing them in direct sunlight will also kill the critters or at least drive them away.

Good advise Bill. I wish wherever I was they had taken action, or at least more care.

Now the bites have subsided, with the help of antibiotics.
