Forbidden fruit: the best cars America never got

American dreams

There was an era when European automakers approached the American market with a “throw it and see what sticks†attitude.

In 1955, you could pay $1195 for a Citroën 2CV, $1889 for a British-built Ford Zephyr or $2350 for a Borgward Isabella.

Those were pricey cars for the day.

$1195 in 1955, would be equivalent to over $10,800 US in today's market.

$2350 in 1955, would be equivalent to over $21,200 US in today's market.

Definitely cars for the wealthy back then.
