An Economical Answer to Short Period Blackouts These home made electricity topics are all over the place both here and sister site Living in Cebu Forums which is going to make it difficult to find information in a few months time so I thought we could try to summarize available solutions. Maybe someone in the know could post a gen set post and another member a solar panel post. *------------------------------- An Economical way to tackle Short Period Blackouts. Building the ideal 'small consumption' backup system. Feel free to prune and/or add. *------------------------------- Some assumptions. 1: Power drops out at fairly regular intervals for 1 or 2 and sometimes more hours at a time. 2: You are on the grid. 3: Cooking is gas and you can buy corner store ice for beer. What do we want to run? * A couple of fans. * A PC with flat screen or a laptop. * Reasonable size CRT TV or any size flat screen plus DVD player. * Maybe half a dozen x 12~15 watts compact fluro lamps or a couple of 36 watt 48" tubes. * Phone charger Note that YOU DO NOT NEED AC, electric cooker, jug, heater, toaster oven, freezer. In fact, steer clear of all appliances that heat or cool. OK, you can do this cheaply, cleanly and quietly with a simple bit of kit available in Cambodia for about $200 or even less. A small 12v battery charger, capable of regular and trickle or float charge. ... Tops $35 ... Just the regular type you would buy for your car or 4x4 ... Ability to trickle charge or float is a must otherwise you will have to monitor manually. One or more 12volt car or truck battery. ... $75 should buy quite large ones. ... No need for specialist deep cycle. The higher capacity the better. ... It might be cheaper to set up multiple cheaper ones in parallel A 12v to 220v inverter. ... About $75 for 750watt to 1000 watt ... No need for special pure sine wave types. So we have 750 to 1000 watts of 220volt power for around $185. 2 fans = 120 watts PC with flat screen about 100w tops CRT TV or flat screen about 100w tops Lights around 100w For an initial outlay of less than $200 we have power to spare. On a reasonable battery, the above items will run for a couple or three hours. Add a battery and you add another couple of hours. Your desktop PC will need to be on a UPS but we could assume everyone has that already. I would think the PC and perhaps the TV and a couple of lights would be permanently hooked up to this kit so that when power cut there would be no interruption. Also, I would imagine there would be a certain degree of protection for the PC and TV caused by spikes. What you get is a cheap silent source of 220v that does not need topping up with gas all the time and starts automatically. Any thoughts?

If I have calculated correctly, my new UPS should...

... run my laptop for about five (5) hours after the power is cut. That is a conservative estimate, mind you. So, hopefully, it will run longer. Today, we had to brownouts, neither for extended periods. But, both would have caused me to have to shut down my computer had I not already purchased my new 1250 VA UPS. I am as happy as a lark, with one exception. The damned thing beeps every three seconds when running the UPS and no service power is detected by it. So, I think, after my warranty is over, I will make it a point to go in and operate on that little beeper.- 19 replies

Be very picky where you choose to live in Sihanoukville.

I chose an apartment building, because it was brand new, nice, secure, the works. Unfortunately, it is also in an electrical grid that is switched on and off, apparently by a trained monkey. You never know when the power will be off, for how long, or how long it will stay on again, once he decides to "engage" the switch. I did not experience brownouts this bad when I was staying in the guest house down by Occheuteal Beach. So, not all areas of Sihanoukville are treated equally.
