    Discounted Ice?

I didn't realize you can get a discount on ice, when purchasing in bulk. Go figure. On the 17th of September, 2017, we purchased one of those horizontal refrigerator / freezer combinations that you may have seen around town, or, in other shops around the country. Ours has "i cold", along with two dolphins on either side of ice cubes, painted (or possibly decals?) on the front of the unit. Anyway, it is half refrigerated compartment, and half freezer compartment. Until she started filling it, with stores, I didn't realize how much food and how many drinks it would actually hold. It holds a hell of a lot more than I thought it would, for sure. Anyway we brought it out to the farm, because we knew we would need a larger volume of refrigerated-freezer storage here, than we would in the city. After all, we cannot just jump on a motorbike and run down the road to the grocery store, like we can in the city. So, I guess this is part of the cost of living in rural Cambodia, as apposed to the convenience of city life. Anyway, Chan recently purchased 30 Kilograms of ice, to store in the freezer of this chest type refrigerator-freezer combo unit. Personally, I was skeptical. I really didn't think it would hold 30 Kilograms of ice. But, it dang sure did. Of course, there isn't much room for anything else in the freezer. But, we have another inverter refrigerator-freezer here, that is identical to the one at the apartment in the city. We keep other frozen foodstuffs in it - filled to the gills. And, with all the refrigerated space, we have ample room for lots of cases of drinks, quite a few 1.5 Liters bottles of water, and vegetables, fruits, coconuts, etc., etc., etc. Okay, so why did I start such a not-so-exciting topic? Here's why: While this may not be a massive discount, we now pay 150r less, for every kilogram of ice. This saves us $1.125 US, on every 30 Kilogram bag we purchase. Like I said, it may not be a huge savings. BUT, when you buy ice as frequently as we do, it will be a considerable savings over the course of a year. (I figure we will purchase more than 30 - 30 Kilogram bags of ice, per year.) Not to mention, we no longer have to go to the village in order to buy ice. They now deliver it right to our freezer. (The longer we stay here, the more people we make contact with, and the more businesses we find that will deliver products we use, right to the farm - and free of delivery fees. Considering the market is 7 Kilometers distance, one-way, we can also figure in fuel and maintenance cost savings for the motorcycles, as well.) In my estimates, at the rate we pay per kWh of electricity here at the farm (770r / kWh), the discount we now get on the ice, will cover the cost to power this refrigerator - freezer over the course of an entire year. Not a bad deal, in my mind.
