Is the "just turn up & walk around/network" tactic still the best for finding work in Sihanoukville?

I would suppose it would depend on the outlook and the need's of the westerner! Just to top up the income or something to keep occupied. Or maybe to socialize with people.

Good point Andy. I've done similar in both Europe and SEA before with only free bed space, food and drinks.

Some of my best times have started from being down and out and living under an olive tree.

why would ANY westerner wish to work as a waiter on Local salaries in Cambodia??

my god, set the bar a bit higher

Not everyone, Richard, is materialistic by nature.

Not everyone needs a lot to live on.

I have personally known a number of expat bar staff, all over Cambodia, who got paid a salary and room and board, for example. This is especially good for younger folks who may want to see the world.

Not to mention, it is a hell of a lot better than just flying around the world on Mommy and Daddy's dime! At least they are doing it on their own.

sorry, my time is worth something and a place to sleep on the floor, free bad food and beer does not qualify as worth my time.

To each their own

I have worked all over europe.SE asia but I was always paid for it,

what do u do when its time to move on??

What Andy said. I don't need to work, but when I don't have something to keep me occupied, life seems a bit lacking. Plus the *small* bit of income is better than just spending all the time.

Sydney Travels I found myself in the very same situation! My answer to this problem for me to be occupied, was when I rented myself a small house I set myself up a small shop in the courtyard! I would sell to the local community. It was nice to know the Cambodian people living around you! It would make a little profit. But when you consider how little the start up costs are! I think I threw in no more than 100 dollars!! I ran the little enterprise for 3 months at no more personal costs

The bar work I saw in Siam Reap would keep you busy! You would also meet travellers, and who knows what other interests may come your way!
