Black Soldier Fly Larvae Update

Recommended Posts

I took a video this morning. If you look at this image,

 you will see the white maggots, which were houseflies. I posted in the past that they were long gone. This short (45 seconds) video shows that, as well as our little friends self-harvesting.

I hope the larvae reproduce as well, once we start a colony of them at the farm.

In a previous post you discussed the possibility of feeding them animal manure, my brother in law has 3 cows and now a few chickens and ducks -  all of which are kept on a small block and hand fed several times a day,  there is a large amount of waste produced and he cleans it up 3 times a day and now has a very large midden that needs to be attended to.  I was hoping that the BSFL could be used to convert this raw waste into compost and that the lava could be used as chicken / duck food.

Yep, from what I have read while researching information on Black Soldier Fly Larvae, they will process various types manure. However, please note that I only feed mine food waste and other leftover scraps. (It's a mental thing, concerning feeding manure raised larvae to fish and chickens I may ultimately eat.)

I would suggest joining and posting specific questions, here:

Here is another forum you can try. I have not posted on it, yet:

================================

Keep in mind, it takes a LOT of those little guys to process what they are fed. You may want to build a large, screened area for building the colony faster than mine is growing.

      We had several of the adults to emerge from their shells today. We also added more larvae to the buckets we made for them to safely go through their pupa stage.I look forward to seeing more emerge in the coming days.

      As a side note, the compost bin is now "house fly free" of house fly maggots (the small slender white ones). They are no longer present in the composter. Only Black Soldier Fly Larvae are working in the compost bin. So, the BSFL are already doing their jobs!
