NAS information

Someone asked, so here is a thread.

I built up a Freenas system. I've had several but in the end the prepackaged ones are sort of puny for guys like us who (1) are technical and (2) are capable of tweaking things.

Basically all you need is a little PC with a tiny (30gb is PLENTY) SSD to boot from and 3 or more HDD for data and this free software. Otherwise I've had decent results for low $$$ with the Lenovo units. The nice thing about the Freenas systems is they have significant computing power since they are intel based and have a lot of CPU and memory.

This makes it so you can for instance run PLEX media server and host your own mini Netflix on the box, do backups, and all sorts of other stuff an ARM or other minimal CPU box will struggle with.

Hope that helps!

I was talking to @JohnOBohn about torrents, movies, series, etc., this afternoon, in fact. We were discussing how we each had many external USB drives, on which to store our respective files.

A NAS would alleviate the necessity for having so many external drives. Not to mention, Western Digital, for example, offers drives specifically designed for this type of duty. Check out Western Digital Red Drives. Or, look at Seagate Iron Wolf Drives.

I am going to start gathering parts to build a NAS machine. I can use an older desktop to use for this purpose. Just not 100% certain if I should head to Phnom Penh, or Bangkok, to get the necessary hardware.

You can also get a cheap refurbished server from WOOT or Amazon maybe, not sure what the availability is in Cambo. Just a cheap homebrew PC with 2+ drives should work. FreeNAS likes a lot of RAM though, the ZFS system is memory happy.
