I am sure I will Paul. But I am wanting to go rural so much.

......Then, IF this works - as I hope and pray it will, I will go to eBay and buy one of three antennas to connect to it, in order to receive a better quality signal from the nearest cell tower.

Antenna (Directional) Option 1 - This one would be about $45 USD, shipped to me.

Antenna (Directional) Option 2 - This one would be about $110 USD, shipped to me.

Antenna (Omnidirectional) - This one would be just under $140 USD, shipped to me........

..........................................................................................

Slow down Paul!

Wait a day or 2 until I've had time to check-out those antennas  (I spent 20 years in the VHF/UHF/microwave antenna game - I actually DO know a bit a about it! - Lol!)

Right away, I can see a couple of questionable statements in the ads:-

Two of the websites describe 2 x 23dBi antennas as 46dbi -  If the 23dBi is for real, then the BEST you could hope for by combining a pair at one end is 26dBi! ( 2 antennas combine for 3dB!).

Maybe (at least in one adv) they are talking about using 2 of these antennas one at each end of the path? - then 23+23 would be 46 for the path gain.

And try to find out the "type number" and price of the "low-loss" cable. Real low-loss cable for these frequencies doesn't come cheap - certainly US$/metre!

Cheers, Oz Jon

I'm in no rush, mate. The second one has been sold, anyway. But, the dB gain was off by a good bit, as you stated. An amateur radio operator and antenna specialist pointed that out to me, as well. I'm talking the 26 db versus 46 db gain.

I am actually considering the omnidirectional antenna, to be honest with you. I feel as though it would be the best choice, IF it becomes necessary to buy it.

Even if I do go with this option, I still want to work on having my ADSL connection installed somewhere on the highway, if I can ever get someone to work with me on it.

You know, I just realized something. The guy who cuts my hair out at the farm, may be willing to work with me on this. That is, his shop is on the same side of the highway, as is the farm. Distance would be about 5kms as well, as the crow flies, from his barber shop, to the farm. Maybe he would let me do something regarding installing the CPE-510s there! I don't know why this didn't hit me before. I'm willing to bet money that he would work with me, especially if I gave his cell phone access to the connection.

Probably some cheap Chinese cable with a 10db loss per meter. :D

OK - I'm all tied up until Tuesday - I'll look into it further then.

I presume that this is basically the same path that I calculated/advised-on for you a few weeks/months past?

I can't immediately find those calculations at the moment, but ....either I told you what antenna gains you needed at each end of the link (or I used the antenna-gains/equipment-claims you told me? - I don't remember! - Hey!, I'm 82!)

Without looking in to it further, that omni antenna gain immediately strikes me as surprising/optimistic!

And why would you consider using an omni antenna anyway?

Why do you want to spread the signal over 360 degrees of azimuth coverage?

Why not mainly in the direction of your farm? - ie use a directional antenna?

Is this an altruistic system you have in mind (with an-omni antenna)? - if so, the nation/locals thank you! - Lol!

Cheers!

ps.  I vaguely remember that you didn't need much antenna gain anyway?- the radio package (with its inbuilt? antennas did the job?) - Hang about until I have time to check things out?

pps. My consulting fee is a can of beer per consultation. You already owe me one from my previous advice - this would bring it up to 2 - can you handle that?

LOL. You are a hoot!

First,  yes, this would be roughly the same path, with a bit of variance one way or another. I think you and I calculated it at 5kms, where as running this from his home or shop, would be closer to 4.5kms. If you recall, the CPE-510s are good up to about 15kms. So, I am well within their range of operation.

So, this idea may come to fruition. That is, a deal with the guy who has cut my hair out near the farm. He has always been very nice to us. Hopefully, that would work as well, if we try to run the ADSL connection to his home or shop, too.

First of the week, we will head out to the farm to explore this more. So, that will put the SIM card WiFi system on hold a bit longer. As you know, I would MUCH rather have my CPE-510s relaying my connection, than I would from the portable WiFi unit that would have to be recharged and the SIM reloaded, fairly regularly. Not exactly the best idea. But, if I had no other choice, then, I would go with it, if it worked out.

I think you may be looking for THIS THREAD.

The omnidirectional antenna just looks better than option 1 of the directional antennas offered. And, I would be less than 5kms from cell tower. So, it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

With that said, as syzmic stated about yagi antennas:

Yagi type antennas work the best.

So, I wouldn't mind finding a yagi antenna, either. I recall using them on 2 meters and 440cm, when I was an amateur radio operator in the US.

The antenna would be solely for our use at the farm, primarily mine - actually. So, no altruism here. 100% greed. :D Besides, the omni would only be for the SIM WiFi router transmission and reception of the signal. The local WiFi signal it transmits would only cover about a 5 to 10 meter radius. It's not very powerful. I think I read somewhere, one battery charge was only good for about 4 hours, prior to needing to be recharged again. So, like I said, definitely not my first choice for internet at the farm.

If you ever make it here, I'll be happy to hook you up with an entire crate of beer. :)

OK Paul,

I've just re-read all the path info from before (that was over a year ago - Wow, how time flys!)

Nothing's changed with that good solution? So it should work OK if you can get a suitable site at the non-farm end.

If I understand what alternative you have in mind - its to use a  HUAWEI E5573s-856 WiFi router at the farm end, good for 10m claimed range (presumably at 1800/2100 or 2500/2300MHz) to work over a 4.5 to 5km range?

If so, then assuming the thing works OK at 10M range, then you want a 500:1 increase in range.

That will need 20*log(500) = 54dB more gain needed. (practically the same, 53dB if your path is 4.5km)....That's a tall order# at around 2GHz!!

Cheers

Before I do anything else, please confirm or correct my understanding of what you want to do.

ps.

# I just looked at possible antenna solutions at 2GHz - impractical!!!! a 12ft parabolic dish is about 35dBi !!! I hope I've misunderstood your problem - Lol!

Yes, that's far and away your best solution - probably your only solution.

The long-range WiFi reception idea doesn't look practical.

Best you polish-up your diplomacy, negotiating and bribery skills and use them on the barber!- Lol!
