hospital

Yesterday I had to travel to hospital in Kampot. I could not pass water. The doctors put in a pipe to release urine from my bladder. They found a growth and transferred me to specialist care in Phnom Penh by ambulance. When I got there the doctor refused to treat me.

That's crazy. Did they say why? Did you try another hospital? Where are you now?

Did you locate another physician to treat you? There are several allegedly competent hospitals in PP, though from internet data most foreigners head to Bangkok for medical problems.

Get better dude!

Andy I'm very sorry to hear this and wish you a speedy recovery. I hope you still have that temporary tube fitted for use on the long trip to uk. Focus only on your health you do not need the extra stress about your business at this time. I'm sure your good lady can manage things in your absence and you will be well taken care of in uk.

I hope this is not inappropriate to say at this time , but everyone should learn from this unfortunate incident and try to arrange health insurance cover with local ( Thailand , Singapore , Malaysia ) hospital services. I'm in my 60's and consider myself healthy, but really one never knows for sure until a health issue or accident strikes. Murphy's law applies.

Take care.

Good advice, but it is also very expensive to do that.  I had a gallstone attack in Bankok last year.  The Thai doc I saw told me to do nothing for 10 days to see what happened.  What happened was my gallbladder ruptured and that is a life-threatening condition.  The Thai hospital I went to refused to treat me even though the doctor (different one) said I would be lucky to survive 48 hours.  A day later the hospital still would not admit me for want of a very large cash payment.  It was a weekend, I had the cash, but getting it via my debit card would take ten days and I had less than one.  The hospital refused to accept debit or credit cards and the doctor said it was too late to fly back to the States.  When my wife and I threatened to call the media, the hospital relented and accepted my debit card and I had the surgery.  However, the doctor screwed up the surgery and now I need more.  So everyone who says medical care in Bangkok is great are very much overstating its greatness in my opinion.  I would never go there for treatment.  Andy is wise to go back to Brittan, I hope they will see him in time.

Good god! Bill that is a horrendous story, they were literally gambling with your life! I guess as you say, the majority of feedback from thai hospitals are positive but they are usually from people with health insurance and the farangs are already aware of which hospitals will accept a particular health insurance provider. But without insurance and trying to get medical treatment in the event of an emergency is risky, and as you said expensive. In any event I hope you get your condition sorted out, and don't leave it too long.

Regarding Andy's situation, he has a long flight to the UK and I sincerely hope all goes well for him, but really if it had been a more urgent issue where he needed immediate treatment ( as in your case doctor told you too late to travel) I dread to think what could happen.

I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to risk living in SE Asia without health insurance , living in Australia I take medical treatment for granted but still try to live a reasonably healthy lifestyle ...well I try! ...I play up now and then. But I do envy those living in Thailand or cambodia who don't have to worry about these things. As they say, " your health is your wealth".
