Hypothetically which is preferable: President Rodrigo Duterte’s ruthless strong-arm dictatorship or Chinese colonialism?

Some choice.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Not being beguiled by all that Chinese money is a big plus in his column.

I recently read that the sea port at SHV and the one at Phnom Penh, are far away from the grasps of the Chinese, due to they are both Japanese ports.

In the article you read, did they refer to Phnom Penh as a "port"?

It's the industrial economic zone, I can't remember what the proper name is. I can go back to the article possibly in a weeks time! With me not having a subscription, only allowed so many articles without payment. It's an Asian development news site.

I have firefox browser and they have an option called "new private window" which doesn't save cookies, pages visited or temporary files. I use it when I visit sites that have a monthly view limit. Using that option I can visit the sites unlimited times per month

This is one of the articles, here referring to Phnom Penh river port.

The port opened after Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953 as the country sought to gain unrestricted access to the open sea and reduce its dependence on its Mekong River port in Phnom Penh.

Cambodia's biggest port sees China coveting Japan's dominant role

Fast-growing Sihanoukville harbor thrives amid Tokyo-Beijing rivalry

SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia -- Once a tranquil seaside enclave in southwestern Cambodia, Sihanoukville, or Kompong Som, has turned into a paradise for Chinese investors in recent years. Casinos, hotels, restaurants, massage parlors and supermarkets are festooned in signs in Chinese. More buildings are under construction, fueled by an incessant inflow of Chinese money and people.

Although the city, 220 km southwest of the capital Phnom Penh and named after the country's late king, is becoming a Chinese outpost, the key feature that makes Sihanoukville shine -- the only deep-water seaport in the country -- remains out of Beijing's reach.

A quote from the above article titled "Cambodia biggest port sees China Coveting Japan's dominate role"

It states:

"The port's strategic significance has also grown as China pursues its Belt and Road Initiative, with Beijing seeking to gain access to harbors in Eurasia, including Southeast Asia.

China overtook Japan as the biggest donor to Cambodia in 2010, and Chinese aid is now three times that of Japan. "There are limits in competing over size of aid packages, Takehara admitted."

Seems to me Chinese money is flexing its muscle.
