Just curious what you do for health insurance after the age of 70 and living in Cambodia ?

Hi. Welcome to the forums. Are you saying you have insurance currently and are under 70 years of age? I have lived in countries in Southeast Asia for the past two decades. All the time without any health insurance. I've always just paid out of pocket, in the past.

Hello welcome to the forum!

I think getting catastrophic insurance should be easy enough. Many companies available depending on which country you are from.

For anything else most people just pay out of pocket.

It will really depend on what your needs are and remember local healthcare is considerably underdeveloped compared to western standards.

Why does it heart you so much to say "As much as it pains me to use the word "benefits"". I paid into this fund and in working with the US military they never paid anything extra into it but when I worked for the government itself they paid in extra money. I worked for my benefits and enjoyed my time with the military and then going on to be a park ranger and firefighter.

Really what is the pain? That we paid into a system that is paying people money that paid little or nothing into the system?

A member here - @tonny2, who is quite voiced on the subject of the Social Security Administration, passed along some recent information he found on the SSA website. This should interest American retirees who reside, or wish to reside, in Cambodia.

The question as to whether or not, American Citizens (residing in Cambodia) can have their SSA funds direct deposited in to a bank account in country, has come up a quite number of times. This question, I am very happy to say, has officially been answered.

But, first, I would like to thank @tonny2, for his efforts in contacting the US Embassy in Mania. Because of his doing so, I have now received the direct deposit form file, to share with others here. So, thank you, James. This is truly appreciated, sir.

Now, if you would like to have your SSA monies sent directly to a bank within Cambodia, please download the form immediately below, open it with a PDF reader, and follow the instructions:

      SF-1199 Cambodia.pdf

PLEASE NOTE: I noticed on the form, that deposits may be converted to Cambodian Riel (KHR), prior to being deposited into an account within Cambodia. This information is located on page 2 of the form. However, I will say that, in the communication forwarded to me, from James, the embassy employee made a point to include the following statement in her reply:

If there is any question in your mind, I would suggest contacting the SSA office at the US Embassy in Manila, to verify this information, prior to filing this form with them.

However, from others whom I know in the Philippines, they have their funds deposited as US Dollars, into USD Savings Accounts there.

In Thailand, where I am currently residing, Bangkok Bank is the only bank authorized to receive direct deposit of United States Social Security payments. What is the designated bank in Cambodia for such deposits?

I've been so busy recently, I hadn't thought of even looking at my ATM / Visa Debit / Visa Credit Cards.

I recently transferred a few thousand dollars to my Schwab account, to use to buy two generators that I ordered, out of Phnom Penh. Well, low and behold, sent the boss to start withdrawing funds - because a company that deals in thousands of dollars of generator equipment doesn't take credit cards - so we would have the cash out to pay for the gensets.

She rings me from the ATM, to tell me it is refusing the card. That was a first, since I opened the account back in the US. I asked her to hang there for a bit, while I contacted Schwab's customer service folks, by live chat.

They verified the card had expired at the end of February. Great. Fantastic. This is after I waited two days to get the monies into that account. So, what next. I told the boss to come on home and that we would have to wait for a bit, before getting this sorted.

There is light at the end of that tunnel, though. The agent informed me they could dispatch a card out to be delivered to me, here in Cambodia. By way of FedEx, no less! Charge to me? Nothing. It is truly getting better! Yes! Unfortunately, they are telling me it will take up to two weeks to arrive. Wait. FedEx is going to take two weeks to deliver an ATM card to me? Well, it could be sooner. But, they prefer to tell their clients that, for obvious reasons.

Anyway, hopefully, the ol' card will arrive this week, so we can get this purchase out the way, and start on the well at the farm.

By the way, I checked my other cards. My ATM card for my credit union in Oregon expired the same dang time, February 28th. At least my other cards were still okay.

So, keep an eye on those expiration dates, folks. You never know when you will need them!
