The Health Ministry is appealing to flood victims to take precautions against contracting diseases as waters recede.

Health Minister Mam Bun Heng on Tuesday made the appeal during a visit to distribute medicine to families in Tboung Khmum province.

Mr Bun Heng said that during floods and as waters recede, people must take care of their hygiene, including cleaning up their surroundings, drinking clean water and sleeping under mosquito nets in order to avoid contracting dengue fever.

Mr Bun Heng also urged residents to make sure that small children do not bathe or swim in flood waters.

“When the floods recede, please clean the environment around the house to avoid contracting diseases,” he said. “Children and women, especially those who are pregnant, must go to health centres and get vaccinated against diseases.”

He added that in cases of snake bites, the victim should be rushed to a health centre or hospital. According to the Water Resources Ministry, water levels in the Mekong river are still above the danger level.

The ministry said yesterday that the level of the Mekong in Stung Treng province is at 10.89 meters, which is above the danger level of 10.70 meters

The ministry said that the level in Kratie province is at 22.22 meters, which is above the danger level of 22 meters, and the level in Kampong Cham province is at 15.46 meters, which is more than the danger level of 15.20 meters.

The ministry added that water in the Sangke river in Battambang province has started to recede.

Meanwhile, Stung Treng provincial Governor Mom Saroeun said yesterday that floods are continuing in Sesan district’s Talat commune.

“There are now 1,108 families who are affected from floods in Talat commune and authorities are sending some food to them,” he said.

The National Committee for Disaster Management said that floods have recently hit the provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Tboung Khmum, Kampong Cham, Prey Vang, Battambang and Kandal. It added that a total of 18 people have died during floods

A sad loss of life. Then the after effects and water's receding bringing even more danger to the effected people.

There will be a large amount of damage, housing, possessions and livelihoods, a large loss to the people overall.
