Pchum Ben Started Today

Sopheap went to the nearby pagoda for the 1s day of Pchum Ben, also known as Ancestors' Day or 'Hungry Ghosts Festival' It is a 15-day Cambodian religious festival. Sopheap offered traditional food and money to the monks at the temple.

The birds are apart of the ritual. Buy four tiny birds, open the cage and they fly away. Will have to research what it symbolizes.

The info I received from the Khmer staff is the birds represent the spirits of your ancestors. When you set them free, they leave the bad karma behind.

As a cynical side note: the birds are trained to fly back after a few minutes. Scams are ubiquitous.

I guess it is more practical than raising hundreds of birds.
